Little Black Box

An Epic Story of Love and Romance by Adam Sill

   This is my Ordinary Adventure

I sat in my room and stared at the floor. Her name rang in my head. She had been all I could think of. Everything about Her seemed so perfect and so lovely to me. I wanted to ask Her a question. The question. It had been on my mind for weeks. and for weeks I contemplated different ways to ask Her. Ways that involved giant banners, stuffed animals, and elephants. But as I sat in my room that night, I was not thinking of how to ask Her, but rather I was thinking about my Father. My Heavenly Father in relation to Her. I thought of how much He loved Her. How He must have chosen me for Her, because it all seemed so right. I thought of how, if I was with Her, I would treat Her like a princess. Like the most important person in the world. I thought of how I would make God the center of our relationship. Then, suddenly, one word popped into my head; "Tomorrow"
I didn't know why, but for some reason my heart knew it. "Tomorrow."
   "Why tomorrow?" I asked myself
"Because," I answered, "You are ready. So is she. Tomorrow."
That was all it took. I was ready to ask her. So I ran into my brother's room and found a small black box sitting on his book shelf. I opened the box to find his class ring. I removed the ring and retreated to my room, where I immediately pulled out tape, scissors, and paper, and got to work on the most romantic, most heartfelt, and, without a doubt, the most foolish thing I would ever do.
The next day I awoke at 5:58 a.m. I leaped out of bed and took a shower. The morning went by fast. I ate breakfast and got ready for school. When I got to school, I got my friends together and told them of my intentions for the day. When they asked my how I was going to do it, I simply pulled out the little black box and opened it. Their impressions were all the same. The girls little gasps of excitement followed by some "oos" and "awes". The boys, however, hung back their heads and laughed. However, their mockery was slightly encouraging. I told my friends to watch as I asked Her the question. They agreed. Some even asked if they could tell more people to come and watch. When I told them it was okay they were filled with excitement.
   So, I went on through the day and I thought about Her. I thought about asking her. I thought of what I was going to say. How I would say it. I sat in Spanish trying to plot out my words in my head;
'I care about you more than anyone else. Whenever I'm not with you, I'm thinking about you, and whenever I am with you, I can't even breathe. I need to be with you. And I think we need to take a step forward in our relationship. Will-'
I was cut off by the sound of my Spanish teacher, Mr. Hernandez, yelling at me, asking me whether I was paying attention or if I was just going to keep staring at Her all period. The class laughed and I shrugged back into my seat in embarrassment.
English. The last class of the day. I pulled out the little black box and stared at it. I thought of how I was going to ask Her. About what Her response would be. About what I would do if She said, "No." This was the longest period I had ever sat through. I was so worried. I sang songs aloud just to relieve the tension. And when I realized that I was sitting in class, I silenced myself as everyone stared at me. People walked by my desk and glanced down at the little black box. When they asked me what it was for, I told them. For I had no shame. The girls in my class surrounded me and asked questions about Her. It was a little comforting, because I did not feel isolated, but rather supported. I got excited when I looked up at the clock and saw that there were only two minutes left in class. I counted down the seconds until I reached zero, and the loud bell rang throughout the school, releasing the students to go home. I stuffed the little black box in my back pocket and left the class.
I walked over to Her class and waited for her. When She walked out of the classroom and I saw her face- her beautiful face, my heart began to race. Now, I was scared, but I did not want to give up. As we walked to the Quad, She told me a story about something that happened in Her class. Though I wanted to listen to Her story, my mind was on the question, and on the little black box stuffed deep in my back pocket. As we approached the very poorly painted rock at the center of the school, my mind began to spin. I stopped walking and looked around to see all of my friends watching me from a distance.
   I grabbed Her arm and She turned around to face me. I had prepared a long speech about how I cared about her and how I wanted to be with her, but the moment I looked into her beautiful eyes, my mind had gone blank. So I spit out what I could muster up;
"Sammy," I said, "I need to ask you a question."
   "What question?" she asked
In one quick motion, I threw down my bag, got down on one knee, took the little black box out of my pocket and opened it. I watched her eyes as they read the piece of paper inside the box that read, "Will you be my girlfriend?"
I am afraid to inform you that She did not say "Yes." However, She did not say "No" either. What She did was more terrifying than answering the question. She grabbed my wrist and tried to pull me away. She was embarrassed. But I pulled her back and said, "No! You need to answer me right now!"
"Yes!" She exclaimed, "Now get up!"
Though She said it in the meanest way possible, she said it nonetheless. "Yes." That word rang through my mind. There were many feelings that followed her answer; Excitement, confusion, acceptance, etc. and they all left a red blushed face on my head. This was happiness. Not joyfulness. But happiness. How I was able to create joy through Her is a different story. Perhaps I will write about it one day. Perhaps not. But as of now, that day was one of my happiest.
We walked together as we left the school. And I held her hand.

My Tortured Heart

I've been praying for love and hoping for romance. Satan gave me a fake feeling that grew into a false hope. Then I began to doubt myself, my words, and my God. Then the words that left my lips could no longer be claimed by God. My heart is a tender one, I know, and with the torment the enemy brought, I am filled with fear.
The many lashes of Satan's whip have left scars of uncertainty and caution. I am so scared of falling in love. Now that I am faced with romance, I am afraid of moving forward. The thought of experiencing what I have previously endured sends me to the corner to curl up in a ball and hide. There is a girl whose heart I crave to hold, yet my fear overcomes my longing. When I remember the pain that I had put myself through, I cannot bring myself to push the relationship forward. I know this is what God wants for me. I know this is part of His plan. I can feel it and, when I do, I am filled with joy and excitement. Then I remember the darkness and my foolish idiotic fears take a hold of me and I retract.
I have just seen God move in so many ways in my life, and right when He sends my this wonderful girl who's relationship with me could be used in so many ways for His kingdom, the fear in my heart sends me running away.
Damn this cowardice heart! Do you not see that the fear that has been planted on your heart is all a part of the Devil's plan? You are a fool and a coward, Adam Sill! You speak of love as if you have experienced it, yet you coil away when God lovingly sends you another person to love! Do not fear love! It is irrational to fear the very thing that conquers fear! Instead, embrace it and accept it. I will be faced with the same torture that I have felt before, it is inevitable. But if love is water, then a man in love is like a man diving into a rocky pond. He knows not what dwells below the surface of the water, yet he goes in, head-first, careless of the pain he might endure.

A Strange New Feeling

When we first met, I did not know the magnitude
Of the feelings I'd come to have for you
You entered my life after a great storm
And I found a new love had been born

A feeling that had slept deep within my heart
You reached in and gave it a new start
I do not know if it will stay
But I'd be a fool to shoo it away

For when I gaze at your beautiful face
I know to look away would be a disgrace
Your eyes, your skin, and your lovely hair
The beauty of an angel is displayed there

A gift from God, I know you are
When the light in your eyes shines like a star
With these new feelings I pray, Father please
Tell me what to do with these

For I've made mistakes prior to
And I'm afraid to repeat them with you
But my heart and mind are at peace again
So I do not fear to let you in

So I offer my hand and my heart
And I know that we shall never part
For you occupy my heart and mind too
So I can't help but saying "I love you"

When we meet, it's easy to see
That I find it hard to breathe
A fool, I know that's what I am
But there's more to see if you take my hand

I don't know what this feeling is
But I hope that it does not vanish
I know that no poem or lyric will do
to express the feelings I have for you

Something about you is reeling
In a strange new feeling

Wild Heart

A Short Story by Adam Sill

The park was crowded on that cool winter day. The boy sat on a bench, all around him there were mothers pushing strollers, men walking their dogs, children playing tag, and an old couple walking hand in hand. He was a tall, handsome young man that had sandy blonde hair with bright blue eyes. The reason he was sitting in the park that day was because he was following someone. He had seen her at school, and he had decided to work up the courage to talk to her. However, once he had followed her into the park, she vanished out of sight. The boy scanned the park with his blue eyes until he found her. There she was, sitting on another bench about twenty yards away from him. She was beautiful, her eyes were a glowing blue, and her hair was a magnificently dark brown. She was reading a purple book with white letters that spelled, "The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet". The boy stood up and prepared to approach her when she looked up from her book to catch him staring at her. He quickly spun around to walk away and tripped over the bench causing him to fall on the ground. The girl started laughing hysterically, causing some of the parks occupants to stare curiously at her.
The girl got up and walked over to the boy, who had now picked himself up off the floor and perched himself back on the bench as if nothing had happened. The girl stopped in front of the boy trying to stare him in the eyes, which proved to be a difficult task because he could not take his eyes off her black boots. "I saw you looking at me." the girl said confidently. She waited for the boy to answer her, but he didn't, so she continued, "I have seen you at school... You don't talk to people, do you?"
"I prefer to keep to myself." the boy stuttered.
The girl sat down next to the boy. "So," she said, "What are you doing here?"
"Just, uhm, enjoying the scenery" he answered
"I'm sorry. what?" The girl asked, "What scenery?"
"Oh, uhm, just you know, the kids, uh, playing 'n stuff."
"You came to the park to watch kids?"
"No, that's not what I meant!"
"Then what do you mean?"
"I meant-" The boy started, but couldn't finish.
"You meant, you were watching me?"
"I-uh" the boy had started to sweat, "I just wanted to talk to you."
"Okay." the girl said, "Let's talk."
The boy glanced down at the book she held in her hands. "What are you reading?" he asked
The girl looked down at the book, then answered, "'Romeo and Juliet' by William Shakespeare."
"It says, 'The Tragedy'" the boy stated.
"Yes. Because in that time, a play had one of two titles; 'Tragedy' means that the play has a sad ending. Most of the time it means the main character dies. A 'Comedy' means the play has a happy ending."
"Interesting." the boy said, "Is it a good book?"
"It's a play actually," the girl corrected, "but yes, it's great. But I feel like people don't really understand it for what it really is. A lot of people just think it's a story of lust."
"Isn't it?"
"No. It's about two young teenagers who fall in love with each other, but their families are rivals, so they can't be with each other. So they have to try to find a way to be with each other. It's not a story of lust. It's a story of love. But most teenagers don't really respect Shakespeare. And if they know any of the plays he wrote, they only know about 'Romeo and Juliet'. They are missing out on some of the greatest works of literature ever written! Like 'Hamlet' or 'Othello', 'The Tempest', 'King Lear'! They're all fantastic! But teenagers just don't care."
"I don't know much about Shakespeare." the boy said.
The girl became a little overwhelmed with disappointment that this boy was just like every other kid she knew. But she masked it and listened as the boy spoke.
"I did see the movie with Leonardo DiCaprio." he said
"Yeah?" the girl said
"Yeah... But to be completely honest, it just made me angry."
"How so?" the girl asked
"Well, Tybalt kills Mercutio, and then Romeo kills Tybalt. That was my favorite part of the movie, because I feel like Leonardo DiCaprio captured that anger and grief beautifully, however, why didn't Romeo just let the Prince capture Tybalt and kill him. Then Romeo wouldn't have to have been banished. But he kills Tybalt, and then after that he screws up again! Balthasar delivers the news of Juliet's 'death' and he freaks out and kills himself, which causes Juliet to kill herself, because they loved each other so much. Really it was the Friar's fault the whole ending happened." the boy paused to think and then continued, "Actually, it wasn't the Friar's fault. It was Romeo's fault. He married Juliet, and started a family. Which means he should have been the one making all the decisions instead of putting it in the hands of some friar. So the tragedy isn't the fact that they kill themselves. The tragedy is that so many men fail to lead their families properly, so their family falls apart. You know?"
The girl was amazed at what had just come out of the boy's mouth. "That's an interesting take." she said.
"Yeah." the boy said
"Yeah." the girl mimicked.
"So, do you want to go get a coffee?" the boy asked
"Sure." the girl answered
The two teenagers stood up together and began walking across the grass to leave the park.
"So what's your name?" the girl asked
"Robert... You?"
"Jenny."
